In case of Roadtrip, long flight, or family vacation…

Break out the audiobooks and put them onto CDs, your laptop or iPod. Not only will that help kill the boredom of lenghty enforced contact with people in small spaces (or the relentless fun group activities), you might actually learn something… or at least manage to get through Beowulf between bouts of consciousness.

Some great sites to check out, for free (or mostly free) audiobooks:

  • LibriVox: Audiobooks of works in the Public Domain (US), read by volunteers. Fiction, non-fiction, children’s lit, poetry and short stories are offered.
  • Audiobooks for Free: You get better quality and features if you pay, but you can still get a lot of different genres, albiet at a lower level quality.
  • Free Classical Audiobooks: Some read by humans, some read by robots of the future!! I mean, some are read by “advanced text to speech.”
  • Learn Out Loud: Audiobooks with more a educational bent. Has everything from Rumi to Lewis Carroll, from Native folk tales to the Confucian Analects.
